Plain Text Message: This would be an example of an every day, plain text, message that I would send to you. I might discuss how the weather is in my city/state/region, or my vacation plans. Everything that I put in this message could be picked up and read by anyone in the world. I could type the wrong email address into the 'to:' line of my message, and someone else could be reading when I will be out of my house, and how long I will be gone. If I was sending this to my stock broker, they could determine what stocks I was buying, or they could intercept my message, change my order, and forward it on to my broker. With very little effort they could even make it look like I had sent this message, and my broker might place the order without ever thinking twice about it. (Scary, isn't it??) |
Signed Message: -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 This would be an example
of the messages that you have been getting from me for a while. I could
still type the wrong email address into the 'to:'line of my message,
and anyone could read this message. It does not offer the sender any
privacy at all, it just makes sure that the message came from me, and
that it didn't get edited in transit. If I was sending this to my stock
broker, and he was using PGP, he could make sure that what is in the
letter is what I wrote, and that the message came from me. |

I think you get the idea on that last one...... |
